Review
Slicex is an application made by Image Line, and as most of the tools they develop, Slicex is an audio-related application - to be precise, it is a drum loop slicing tool. Slicex is a VSTi (Virtual Studio Technology Instrument), meaning that Slicex can work with Image Line's own FL Studio suite of tools or with any other Virtual Studio Technology application.
Once you launch Slicex you will notice a really great looking interface - you can see a master panel, an articulation panel, an editor and the keyboard. However, if you want to actually do something, you realize it is not very intuitive. The menus seem to be hidden everywhere and you must sometimes dig inside a tool and move down two submenus in order to find the option that you need. Also, there is a notable lack of hints as to what each button does – you find out only when you click on it.
Setting these problems aside, once you find your way in the application you find it can rival tools like Kontakt and BeatBurner in terms of features and pricing. With Slicex is easier to slice and build up a loop, and there are plenty of tutorials and help files in the application's website. There is also an integrated downloader, so you can get free sample files, which are great for beginners. This is a slicer that is worth taking a look at, if you can forgive getting lost for the first few times. |
